Hiking Pleasures

Exploring Freudenstadt and breathing in the bracing mountain air two things which can be ideally combined in a tour of the picturesque town. And there is lots to see as well.

We start our city-tour of the city at the Kurhaus/Congress Center
at Promenadeplatz. First drop into the Kurhaus and visit an exhibition or simpy enjoy the peace a greenery in the <brdesigntimesp=18297>adjoining Kurgarten park.</brdesigntimesp=18297>

From here, your route takes you along Lossburger Strasse to the largest market square in Germany. Here - and all around the
market square - numerous shops, restaurants and cafés invite
you to linger, window-shop and make the odd purchase. After
app. 100 meters you turn into the "third parallel street south of
the market square", which was first to be given the name "Reichstrasse" after the establishment of the German Reich in
1871, and follow this street as far as "Holzacker". There you
turn left into the first "Gässle", as the narrow streets are
known, and arrive at the 219 x 216 m large market square.
Here ou can see the fountin designed by Pof. Lohrer in 1992, <r>the "Memminger Brunnen", and replenish your energy in the
so-called Roseneck in one of the outdoor cafés with traditional
coffee and Black Forest gateau. Stroll beneath the arcades to
the Rathaus, the Town Hall, at the upper end of the market
square. From the tower of the city hall you have a magnificent
view over the city and a bird's eye view of the goings-on at the country market (Tuesdays and Fridays).</r>

Stroll along the "higher market place" to the Neptune Fountain
with the coat of arms of Freudenstadt which contains deer's
antlers, fish and the letter F. Beyond that you will find the
cityhouse with the local heritage museum, the olklore museum,
and the library whch  also worth a visit. Located opposite
(from April 2000) is the Tourist Information Office on Stuttgarter Strasse.

Having crossed Lossburger Strasse, you find yourself in front of
the "Hypothekenvenus". This monument, designed by the Freudenstadt artist David Fahrner, commemorates the
destruction of the city in 1945 and its reconstruction from 1948 - 1951.

In the center of the market square stands the new emblem of Freudenstadt - a large water feature which was inaugurated in 1999 on the occasion of the Freudenstadt's 400th Jubilee. The
play of the fountain with its variety of alternating pictures
fascintes young and old alik.

The park of the "lower market place" located beyond it is the
ideal place for a rest before viewing the city church, whose L-shaped building marks the end of the market square.

Now you leave the arcade-lined market square through the
narrow street to the right of the Stadtkirche, cross Alfredstrasse and Rappenstrasse and proceed along Wölperwiesenweg. From here you can see the Christophstal valley and the Bärenschlössle with its Renaissance fascade which was erected in 1627 by Peter Stein.

At the end of Wölperwiesenweg you arrive back at Strassburger Strasse. Here lies the entrance to the reudenstädter mine, <brdesigntimsp="18040">beyond which rises the car-free zone on the Kienberg mountain with the Friedrichsturm. It is worth visiting the tower to savor the view of Freudenstadt and the surrounding area.</brdesigntimsp="18040">
